Mansa to Jalsa: The Satte Pe Satta Payment That Built Amitabh Bachchan’s Iconic Juhu Home

Amitabh Bachchan’s iconic Juhu bungalow, Jalsa, began as a property named Mansa, reportedly received as payment for his work in the 1982 film Satte Pe Satta. The original Mansa was later sold and repurchased, renamed Jalsa, and the Bachchan family has now given the Mansa name to a newer property in the same neighbourhood.

The story links one of Bollywood’s most famous residences to a specific film deal from the early 1980s, involving producer N. C. Sippy and his family’s production banner.

The Satte Pe Satta Connection

Producer N. C. Sippy is said to have given Amitabh Bachchan a bungalow measuring approximately 10,000 square feet in Juhu as remuneration for Satte Pe Satta. The comedy was produced by Romu Sippy and directed by his younger brother, Raj Sippy.

The property was then known as Mansa. According to a report by The Free Press Journal, producer Romu Sippy recounted the anecdote of how his father, N. C. Sippy, handed the bungalow to Bachchan against his remuneration for the film.

Amitabh Bachchan had previously worked with the Sippy banner on several films, including Bombay to Goa, Anand, Chupke Chupke, Mili, and Alaap.

Sold, Repurchased, and Renamed Jalsa

The property did not remain with Bachchan continuously. In a later conversation with The Free Press Journal, Bachchan revealed that he had sold Mansa and later repurchased the same bungalow at his wife Jaya Bachchan’s behest.

Bachchan confirmed the transaction during a social media interaction. He also remarked that he had paid a far higher market price for the property the second time around.

After repurchasing it, the family renamed the bungalow Jalsa. They eventually rebuilt the property, and it became one of Mumbai’s best-known celebrity addresses. Jalsa is closely associated with Bachchan’s Sunday tradition, when fans gather outside the residence to catch a glimpse of him.

A 1999 Ownership Claim

In November 1999, Amitabh Bachchan told the Debt Recovery Tribunal that the Juhu bungalow then known as Mansa did not belong to him or his wife Jaya. He said it was the exclusive property of Ramola Bachchan, wife of his brother, Ajitabh.

Bachchan made the submission in response to a recovery suit filed by the government-owned Canara Bank, which sought attachment of his properties in Mumbai. The bank was pursuing its case by seeking attachment of the Juhu bungalow.

The tribunal submission adds a layer to the property’s history, separate from the widely reported narrative of the Satte Pe Satta payment.

The New Mansa and Other Juhu Properties

The Mansa name has returned to the Bachchan family’s property portfolio. A newer bungalow acquired by the family in the 2000s, located behind Jalsa, has been rechristened Mansa. It was earlier known by another name.

The Bachchans own several properties in the Juhu-Vile Parle Development scheme. Janak, situated a short distance from Jalsa, serves as the family’s office and a place for entertaining guests. The family purchased Janak in 2004.

Ammu, another Bachchan property beside Jalsa, has a bank on its ground floor, while the first floor is residential. Prateeksha, the actor’s first famous address in Juhu, remains part of the family’s real estate holdings.

The name Mansa is a Mandinka and Maninka term from West Africa that translates to ‘king,’ ’emperor,’ or ‘sultan.’ The new Mansa property sits behind Jalsa, providing the family with additional security and space for private gatherings.

Current Status

Jalsa remains the Bachchan family’s primary residence and a landmark in Mumbai’s Juhu neighbourhood. The property’s value has been estimated between Rs 100 crore and Rs 120 crore in recent reports.

The Bachchan family has not publicly commented on the latest reporting about the Mansa property’s history or its current status.
